Rick's Experiences
- Rick has taught courses about economic growth, micro-economic theory, international trade and finance, technological innovation, and interdisciplinary decision-making. He has written books and articles about growth, innovation, science, ethics, culture, and public policy analysis.
- Rick has considerable experience chairing committees and meetings. Rick strives to ensure that all voices are heard, and that decisions are made which incorporate as many diverse perspectives as possible.
- Rick has negotiated several contracts on behalf of the thousands of academic staff members at the University of Alberta.
Rick has lobbied both federal and provincial governments on postsecondary education issues, and appeared before committees of the provincial legislature, House of Commons, and Senate.
- As an Associate Dean, Rick was responsible for creating the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies, which now supports eight programs serving hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. He also spearheaded the development of a new Major in Science, Technology, and Society, as well as the Individualized Major which allows students to design their own degree program.
- In public speaking, in addition to over two decades of teaching, Rick has made presentations to countless academic audiences and community groups.
